Jessie’s insights and personal experiences around belonging became the driving force of her life’s work, which focuses on our some of our most pressing social issues (newcomer integration, indigenous collaboration, and poverty, to mention a few). She knows first-hand that painful experiences can either hold us back… or propel us forward. When we transform painful experiences into a greater purpose, we can become powerful catalysts for change. Jessie employs a belonging lens, a simple compass and raw emotion to help us re-connect to our values and relationships, re-examine our systems and institutions, and re-discover our incredible diversity, the wisdom and the gifts that lie within it.
Jessie Sutherland is a speaker, trainer, best-selling author and the founding director of an award-winning community transformation model called “Finding Home: How to Belong in a Changing World”. As a ‘Belonging Specialist’ and ‘Worldview Strategist’, she was nominated for Vancouver’s ‘Remarkable Women’ Award in 2014. The award celebrates reconciliation and honours women who build understanding and empathy between people. Jessie’s steadfast belief in human dignity, capacity and potential are the driving principles in all that she does. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
